The Oakland History Room in the Oakland Library seemed like a good place to start. I could get side-tracked easily by those Oakland panoramas that are now on display, but instead I see there is "Electronic databases". From there, I filter for history and get these good looking sources:
- California Digital Newspaper Collection, already a favorite, but who is having server issues currently.
- Online Archive of California, another favorite.
- Here's one that's new to me: Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)
And here's an odd place that the DPLA took me - to New York Public Library's StereoGranimator! You can look at stereographs in your choice of analglyph (green/red) or animated 3D (some will make you feel like you are there and some will make you nauseous). There are lots of 1906 earthquake if tyou search for "san francisco". The popular selection is good, too.
PLUS! You can create your own animated gif or anaglyph from a selection of stereographs.

The Railroad System in California: Oakland and Vicinity (E.C. Sessions) has this great map of Oakland in 1871.
Also found a Thompson and West 1878 set of pictures of where we went hiking today above Niles. Found the whole book here and here.
To make your own 3D from a non-stereo photo, here's a good Photoshop tutorial.
